The Untamed (Chinese: 陈情令; pinyin: Chén Qíng Lìng) is a 2019 Chinese television series adapted from the xianxia novel Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, starring Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo. The series follows the adventures of two soulmate practitioners who travel to solve a series of mysteries linked to a tragic event in the past. While the original web novel depicted a frank romance between the two main male characters, the adaptation was censored with homoerotic subtext due to China’s banning of LGBT depictions in movies.
It was broadcast on Tencent Video in China between 27 June – 20 August 2019. The 20-episode special edition of the drama aired on WeTV from December 25, 2019. It is currently available worldwide on the online streaming platform Netflix. Untamed was a critical and commercial success both locally and internationally, with critics praising the actors’ performances, powerful storylines, versatile characters, elaborate outfits and makeup, stage production, and plot’s loyalty to the novel. CGI and action sequences have been criticized. It was one of the most profitable series of 2019.
The series, which had a total of 8 billion views on Tencent Video as of May 2020, made it one of the most-watched Chinese TV series on the platform. According to the “China’s Internet Audiovisual Development Research Report” for 2019 and early 2020, “The Untamed” ranked first in popularity index. Due to the success of the series, two supporting films are Fatal Journey (2019) and The Living Dead (2020). A mobile game based on the series will also be released by NetEase Games.
