Brokeback Mountain Synopsis
In 1963, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist were hired by Joe Aguirre to herd their sheep in the Brokeback mountains over the summer. After a night of heavy drinking, Jack passes to the hesitant Ennis, and Ennis finally responds to Jack’s advances. Ennis tells Jack that this is a one-off event, but they soon develop a passionate sexual and emotional relationship. Finally, Jack and Ennis part ways; Ennis marries his longtime fiancee Alma Beers and has two daughters with him. Jack returns to look for work next summer, but Aguirre, who observes Jack and Ennis on the mountain, refuses to recruit him.
Jack moves to Texas, where he meets rodeo rider Lureen Newsome; they get married and have a son. Jack visits Ennis after four years. Upon the meeting, two passionate kisses that Alma accidentally observed. Jack raises the issue of creating life on a small farm with Ennis, but Ennis refuses; She does not want to leave her family and haunts a childhood memory of her father showing her the corpses of two gay men who were tortured and killed.
Ennis and Jack meet infrequently for fishing trips as their marriage deteriorates. Lureen leaves the rodeo, goes into business with his father, which causes Jack to work in sales. Alma and Ennis finally divorced in 1975. Upon hearing about the divorce, Jack goes to Wyoming and tells Ennis that they should live together, but Ennis refuses to get away from their children. Sad Jack finds solace in Mexico with male prostitutes.
Alma eventually confronts Ennis about the true nature of her relationship with Jack. The couple’s argument causes Ennis to cut contact with Alma. Ennis continues to have a brief romantic relationship with a waitress named Cassie. Jack and Lureen become friends with another couple, Randall and Lashawn Malone, and it is implied that Jack and Randall have a brief relationship. At the end of a fishing trip, Ennis tells Jack that he can’t take more time off from work to meet him. The two have an argument where they blame each other for not being together. Ennis begins to cry and Jack hugs him.
After a while, Ennis receives a postcard stamped “Deceased”, which he sent to Jack. He searches for Lureen, who accidentally says Jack died when a car tire burst in his face, but Ennis suspects Jack was killed by someone who discovered his secret life. Lureen tells him that Jack wants his ashes to be scattered across Brokeback Mountain. Ennis meets Jack’s family and offers to take Jack’s ashes to the mountain. Jack’s father refuses, preferring them to join a family plan. Ennis goes to the bedroom where Jack finds his bloody shirt in the closet. She discovers that from a fight they had that summer, Jack was hanging him with his shirt. Ennis holds the shirts to his face and cries quietly.
Later, Ennis’ 19-year-old daughter, Alma Jr., arrives at the trailer to announce his engagement. She asks her to bless and invites her to the wedding. Alma Jr. As soon as he leaves, Ennis goes to his closet, where Jack and his shirts hang together with a Brokeback Mountain postcard. With tears in his eyes, he looks at the crowd for a moment before walking away and says, “Jack, I swear …”.
