With the contributions of Eurimages and the Ministry of Culture. In 17th century Istanbul, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi (Aydan), Lagari Hasan Çelebi (Okan Bayülgen), Evliya Çelebi (Haluk Bilginer) and Bekri Mustafa (Savaş Ay) are discussing research on how humans can fly like birds in the sky. Hezarfen’s slave, and later his son, Francesca (Beatriz Rico), the mute daughter of the Italian captain, helps them based on Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings. While Hezarfen was waiting to be rewarded by making his historical flight from the Galata Tower with his false wings, as a result of the provocation of the conservative Şeyhülislam (Çalışkur), upon the order of Murat 4, Lagari, who descended from the sky to the Bosphorus waters, was deported to the Crimea.
Istanbul Beneath My Wings Synopsis
The movie takes place in the 17th century. Two brothers Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi and his brother Lagari Hasan Çelebi are researching bird flight. New Sultan IV. Murat resists the rule of his mother, Valide Kösem Sultan, and tries to enforce strict law and order in the empire. Meanwhile, a Venetian ship captured by Algerian pirates is brought to Istanbul. One of those on the ship is a girl with a manuscript showing how to fly, the latter of which comes into Hezarfen’s possession. However, this manuscript cannot be deciphered by anyone.
Hezarfen and Hasan (unlawfully) are caught examining a corpse and sent to execution. Upon the intervention of the sultan, they are sent to the court. Hasan tries to justify his research and experiments by claiming that it can be used as a weapon to defeat Ottoman enemies. Murat forbids experiments on dead human bodies, but by blessing the duo’s research on flying, he hopes for a new army of flying soldiers capable of dropping bombs and breaking through ground-level obstacles like walls and the sea. To fulfill their mission, Hezarfen and Hasan tell Murat the undecipherable scenario and ask him to release the girl from the dungeon.
The script is by Leonardo da Vinci and they realize he also had the idea to fly with wings, but the text is encoded so they can’t read it. Hezarfan and the girl named Franceska fall in love with each other. After seeing a few fireworks, Hassan tries to experiment with the rockets and during a major launch manages to reach a reasonable altitude before recovering and landing in the water below.
When some drinks are accidentally spilled on the manuscript, the coded text becomes visible and Hezarfen builds a flying machine with artificial wings using his own ideas and those of Da Vinci. The conservative Sheikh-ul Islam, who is against Hezarfen, tries to turn the Sultan against him. He succeeds when the Sultan forbids Hezarfen to fly and orders his arrest. Hezarfen (along with Franceska) manages to escape to the Maiden’s Tower with the help of Evliya Çelebi and launches his flying machine to the opposite side of the Bosphorus.
