Istanbul Tales (Turkish: Tell Istanbul) is a 2005 Turkish drama-anthology film directed by Selim Demirdelen, Kudret Sabancı, Ümit Ünal, Yücel Yolcu and Ömür Atay, telling five interconnected stories in today’s Istanbul based on the fairytales Snow White Cinderella, Pied Piper, Sleeping Beauty and Little Red Riding Hood. The film, which was released nationwide on March 11, 2005, won many awards, including Best Film, at the 24th International Istanbul Film Festival.
Istanbul Tales Synopsis
One night in Istanbul, 5 stories. There is only one thing that unites these seemingly separate stories. They are all like old fairy tales.
Fate, as Borges said, is fond of repetition and variation. Turns a gypsy clarinetist into a Pied Piper with Mouse. The Red Hat Girl is a mafia courier. Cinderella is an unfortunate prostitute. A “beautiful world” princess fleeing from her murderer encounters the 8th dwarf in the forest of Beyoğlu. A starving Kurdish youth who has just arrived in Istanbul meets Sleeping Beauty. 5 famous fairy tales appear and disappear in the night of Istanbul. Fairy tales flash in ordinary lives.
