Homophobia is a crime in Switzerland
In the referendum, which asked whether the law on hate crimes in Switzerland was extended and whether homophobia was sanctioned or not, the first results were announced.
According to the referendum, %62 of the support vote came to the legal regulation, which envisages discrimination and homophobia to be included in the scope of crime according to sexual orientations.
Deciding to expand existing legislation that prohibits racial discrimination, the Swiss Parliament makes acts of hate, discrimination or provocation against people on the basis of sexual orientation
The surveys conducted before the referendum revealed that the “anti-homophobia” law received great support, despite opponents who thought it would “violate freedom of opinion.”
It is commented that the result is the victory of the gay community in Switzerland. The result on Sunday revealed that the public is more sensitive than expected to discrimination.
